MTECH IN INDIA

Four years of engineering not seeming enough to make you technically sound? If you feel that core is where your career lies, then Mtech is the thing for you.You might be the next chief engineer of an MNC…know how..

Why M.Tech?
Apart from serving as a platform to get into better companies, the financial freedom that one gets while doing an M.Tech is the best part. MHRD pays you Rs.8000/per month(recently hiked from Rs.5000/-pm) as Assistantship to M.Tech students with which one can easily support his/her studies including paying fees and other expenditures.
People who are aspiring for Research oriented jobs (which are supposed to be flexible and not very hectic apart from being challenging) get good opportunities because R&D Depts. of companies mostly take PhDs and MTechs. The different way of studying at IISc/IITs which includes giving importance to recent research papers rather than just textbook study, high degree of flexibility in choosing subjects to suit your interests and requirements, giving more importance to practical knowledge. One gets opportunities for challenging jobs in Research Oriented Startup Companies also in one’s respective area of interest.

The job profile of an M.Tech?
The job profile can’t be defined as it depends a lot on your branch of study. In an M.Tech program one chooses a field of interest and tries to specialize in it. You have visiting companies looking specifically for your field of interest. So there you get the opportunity. Other point is that the companies coming in IISc/IITs generally recruit for their Research and Development Depts. So the job profile could be research oriented.

The relevance of an M.Tech degree in India
No doubt there has been a lot of emphasis on MBA nowadays, but there is no comparison whatsoever between MBA and M.Tech as the selection depends on your interest. If you always wanted to be a complete techie, M.Tech should undoubtedly top your priority list. One gets to know what actually research activities are and how to go about doing them. And if one wants to make contribution to his/her field, then with some hard work you can publish papers in world class conferences and journals.

Perception vs. reality of an M.Tech.
M Tech is an opportunity, it is not a standalone value addition. It adds value depending on what kind of efforts you put in, the amount of learning you did, the kind of projects you do unlike B.Tech.

Q, Is coaching absolutely necessary for success in GATE?

No, not entirely. Its just about knowing the basic concepts. Coaching helps to maintain regularity in your prep and test series helps to track performance.

Q. Third year or final year- which is the best time to sit for GATE?
One should give an honest prepared attempt to GATE in third year itself as there are only one or two subjects that you have not done till that time which would come in GATE exam. It’s better to study all your subjects properly since the start of second year. There are many advantages of giving GATE in third year. If you get through, you have the confidence to wait for good companies in placements, it helps in your campus preparation. In case you get a good job you may later decide not to go for an M.Tech. In case you don’t get through in 3rd year, you have an experience of actual GATE paper so you can analyze your mistakes. Given you have substantial understanding of your subjects. I feel GATE can be cracked in two months (Dec and Jan) of DEDICATED hard work.

Q. What about the last month of preparation?
A very important stage. You often get confused whether to revise or see new things. So solve previous year papers and see what things have been appearing frequently. One important thing in GATE is that its relative, your score depends not only on your performance but also on others’ performance. In GATE, some questions are there where you will definitely get stuck, which is precisely why they are there for. You should not fall into this trap.
